Characteristics of the Barbary Sheep
The Barbary sheep is one of the most prized big game species among stalking enthusiasts in Spain. Native to the mountainous regions of North Africa, it has adapted perfectly to the arid and rugged terrain of Murcia, Almería, and Alicante, where it finds an ideal habitat for its development.
Its most distinctive feature is its large, backward-curving horns, which continue to grow with age and constitute the main value of the hunting trophy. In addition, adult males have a striking mane that runs along their neck, chest, and front legs, especially visible during the rutting season.
Females are smaller and have thinner, shorter horns, although they maintain the extraordinary agility that characterizes the species. Both males and females are notable for their ability to move with ease across cliffs, ravines, and steep slopes, making Barbary sheep stalking a demanding and highly exciting activity for the hunter.
The Barbary sheep possesses excellent eyesight and a very wary nature, quickly detecting any human movement or presence. This observational ability, combined with its capacity to take refuge in hard-to-reach areas, means that every Barbary sheep hunt requires patience, strategy, and good physical preparation.
In Spain, the best Barbary sheep populations are located in the mountains of Alicante, where the climatic conditions and mountainous terrain favor the development of high-quality specimens. Large animals can also be found in Murcia, though less frequently than in Alicante. Finally, in Almería, we can find Barbary sheep of a good size suitable for hunting, but not as large as in the other areas.
Best time to hunt the Barbary sheep
The best time to hunt Barbary sheep depends on the hunter’s preferences and the terrain conditions, although the autumn and winter months usually offer the most favorable days for a quality stalk. During this period, temperatures are milder, visibility improves, and the animals are more active in the early morning and late evening.
In Alicante, home to some of the best Barbary sheep populations in Spain, the Mediterranean climate allows for Barbary sheep stalking for much of the year, always respecting current hunting regulations and authorized seasons. The mountain ranges and rugged terrain of these provinces provide a perfect setting for locating large males and enjoying a true big-game hunting experience.
The colder months also make travel easier for the hunter, as hiking in mountainous terrain is more comfortable and the animals remain active for longer periods. Furthermore, the vegetation is usually less dense, facilitating observation and approaching the animals.
At Garnica Hunting Spain, we plan each Barbary sheep hunt in Murcia and Almería taking into account weather conditions, the behavior of the species, and the state of the trophies, with the aim of offering each hunter the best chances of success and an unforgettable hunting experience.
